Steeples in sight now

Posted under Races and Results

I was pretty happy to win the 3000m at the Briggs Athletics Classic in 9.04.  I led from the start and it took me the first few laps to get a feel for the right pace.  The conditions and the atmosphere of the crowd were fantastic.  It wasn’t easy running on my own but I felt good bringing home the last km in 2.55.  I like running in Hobart.  I will start thinking about steeplechase again now- the Melbourne Grand Prix (21/2) and the Brisbane Nationals (29/2).

Briggs Athletics Classic

Posted under Races and Results

This Friday night will be great for athletics in Hobart.  The Briggs Athletics Classic starts at 6pm and has some of Australia’s best athletes, especially in the men’s fields.  I will run my first 3000m flat race for this season.  I’m feeling good…my aim is obviously to win in front of my home crowd.  I plan to run a very quick steeple in February to qualify for Beijing, so I need to see what I can do without the 35 jumps in the way!

Tasmanian Carnivals – Fun and Fierce!

Posted under Races and Results

It is hard to win these carnivals races! (Mostly mixed races run on grass and handicapped.) Each year I run faster, and each year my handicap is put back even further.  Looking back over my five races in five days, I think I got better as I went along.  The Latrobe 1600m was a shock to my system, especially as I had to run 50 metres more than last year, but I ran well in my 400m races shortly afterwards as the backmarker.  I’ve always wanted to be the backmarker wearing the red singlet but I didn’t think that would happen in the 400!  Devonport was fun- in the mile I ran strongly all the way so despite finishing 6th behind Craig Mottram, I was pleased.  In the women’s 800m, my handicap was pulled back another 20 metres this year and I made up a lot of ground on the front markers- just not quite the 80 metres I needed to!  The Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals this week have been great fun and great racing, as well as a bit of a holiday with my family.
