Wet shoes

Posted under Races and Results

Rain, showers, downpours, drizzle and gale force winds: that’s Hobart in late September.  I can hardly remember enjoying the outdoors.  I can’t wait until I can run in the warmth again.  I am doing more family activities at the moment, such as going to the Storm the Stage State final, the Seussical the Musical, Ten Pin bowling and numerous birthday celebrations.  It’s not usually as busy, but we’ve had to find things to take us out of the house.

The local newspaper asked me for my AFL tip for the Grand Final.  I wasn’t completely sure who was playing, but managed to get around it by tipping the ‘underdog’ by 8 points.  At least that gave me a reason to cheer for St Kilda.

Drug testers make home visit

Posted under Races and Results

I need to tell the drug agency where I will be for at least one hour every day.  The forms are submitted three months in advance, so it’s easiest to say I’ll be at home early in the morning.  There is a down side though.  At 7.00am the other day, (while I was thinking I should get up), my husband answered an officious knock at the door.  Hearing ‘Is this the residence of Donna MacFarlane?’ made me jump out of bed pretty quickly.  Throwing on track pants and still a bit dazed, I walked in to see three ASADA officials in my lounge room.  Marty was also there in his dressing gown, asking if anyone would like tea or coffee.  Odd.  I wished I had tidied up a bit more before I went to bed.  I cleared the dining table to make room for all the paperwork and ‘accessories.’  At 7.10am I was having a blood test.  Then I had to give a urine sample in my bathroom.  The kids were awake by then and a bit alarmed at the strangers in our house.  I usually get nervous pouring the sample into the two narrow glass bottles- but when it’s over my own dining table the stakes are higher!  Marty raised  a slight eyebrow but future dinner guests need not fear…all done without spilling a drop.

Snow in Hobart

Posted under Races and Results

I’ve been home (and back at work) for a couple of weeks now.  I coped pretty well with the jet lag but Marty has only just stopped falling asleep after dinner and waking me up at 5am.

I’m taking a bit of time now to ‘let the dust settle’ and increase my base fitness.  I’ve never been a big mileage athlete compared to some distance runners, but I need to run more each week.  The couple of times I was sick or injured this year hit me hard because I didn’t have much of  a fitness buffer to carry me through.

I’ve been training for fun this week.  That actually included swimming, running for an hour at the beach, doing some core strength work in the gym as well as a Spin class (that hurt!)  Most exercise has been indoors on purpose…it snowed at my house on Monday.
