One week until Run the Bridge

Posted under Races and Results

The first Hobart Run the Bridge fun run will be on next Sunday morning at 7am.  I haven’t worked out how early I should wake up yet…but definitely no earlier than 5.30am! It’s a 10km course and entries are still open (but close before race day).  I have written some tips for race day that may help- click on the Run the Bridge logo on the right.  I’ll need to remember to pace myself-  it’s been a while since I covered the distance.

Australia Day competition

Posted under Races and Results

My family and I made the trip to Latrobe for the second of the State triathlon series races on Australia Day.  I won the women’s event, although it was disappointing that the race favourite had to pull out part way through the race with a flat tyre.  I loved the course- the river was calm and warmish (no wetsuit…that saved me heaps of time not having to get it off).  The bike course was a bit hilly- that suited me too.

The Australia Day festival at Latrobe was great fun…ferret races, gumboot throwing, a scarecrow competition.  A short family holiday.

No ocean swimmer

Posted under Races and Results

It was only 750 metres but I was longing to reach land.  We started the race by running into the surf and a strong headwind.  The waves were so high I couldn’t see the buoy markers.  Apart from that there were plenty of brown jellyfish.  We were told not to worry…they would sting us but fresh water would ease the pain.  This was nothing like swimming in a pool.  I caught a glimpse of the surf rescue boat at one stage- pulling out another competitor who had their arm raised for assistance.  Breastroke and deliberate breathing were a feature of this stage of my triathlon.  Not surprisingly, the bike and run legs were better.

What comfort zone?

Posted under Races and Results

I’m trying new things all the time so the nerves of the unknown are becoming familiar.  They’re not always welcome- I didn’t like feeling the jellyfish brush past my arm whilst swimming at the beach, or riding downhill around the bends as fast as I could before the faster pack of guys behind caught me.

The most important thing I’ve noticed is the benefit of having other people to train with.  I’ve met some really great people and on the whole I’m loving it.  I can run on my own but without the group I would not be as active.

There is another triathlon in Hobart tomorrow.  I am not ready to race the Olympic distance yet (1.5km swim, 40km ride, 10km run) so I will stick with the ’sprint’ (750m swim, 20km ride, 5km run).

Time Free

Posted under Races and Results

My children have both gone on holiday with friends for a couple of days, leaving Marty and I home for a change.

We still had to go to work each day, but I’d forgotten what life was like before becoming a parent.  It was amazing…we went for a bike ride together, I did my running session in peace, we went out for dinner and we went to the Savoy Baths.

There was still so much time, I even did some cooking and played the piano for the first time in ages.  It’s very quiet though and I’ll be happy when they’re home.
